I am an award-winning children's author and storyteller. Thank you for visiting my website.
I am now accepting bookings for virtual school and library visits
I'm delighted to announce that my new novel The Polka Dot Shop is out now!
The Secret Cooking Club was the winner of the Times Chicken House Children's Fiction Award 2015. I hope you enjoy this story of food, fun, family, and friendship.
Confetti & Cake is the delicious sequel to The Secret Cooking Club. Follow the further adventures of Scarlett and her friends!
From the acclaimed author of the Secret Cooking Club Series, The Polka Dot Shop is a fresh, authentic, and totally addictive novel about how real makeovers go so much deeper than clothes.
What reviewers say:
[Laurel Remington] has created a heroine to care about; plus, there are wonderful descriptions of cakes so exceedingly good that even Mr Kipling might approve. It's Jacqueline Wilson for the Bake Off generation and a fitting winner of the Times/Chicken House children s prize 2015. (The Times)
Pre-teen girls will fall headlong into this heart-warming drama, which is a read-in-one-sitting affair but just be sure to keep the tissues at the ready. (Evening Echo)
This is a gripping, thought provoking story full of emotional moments. You share Scarlett's feelings, willing her to do well, cheering her successes and cringing at her mum's thoughtless actions. (Primary Times)
A warm, touching and cosy novel! (Angels & Urchins)
A sharply observed story about family, friends and the world of social media, this mixes the magic ingredients of baking and blogging to create a perfect literary treat. (South Wales Evening Post)
The short review is that this book is AWESOME ... I really hope there will be a sequel as I'm sure that the secret cooking club will continue to have adventures! (Nayu s Reading Corner)
The author gives us an excellent insight into the life and feelings of a pre-teen girl. Friendship - food - family; all perfectly combined to cook up a winner of a book. (Parents in Touch)
School visits and Writing Workshops
I regularly visit schools and libraries for fun and interactive assemblies, presentations and writing workshops. I can also do 'virtual' school visits on Zoom or other platform on request. My slide presentation on 'Ingredients of a story' involves an interactional 'story bake-off' and is a favourite among students of many different ages.
I also do writing workshops on 'Spice up your story' - helping students learn a different approach to topic writing.
My new presentation 'Designing a story' is a talk based on The Polka Dot Shop and has a fun, interactional dressing up scene for the children to act out!
My presentations are aimed at KS2 and KS3 but I can accomodate different age groups by prior arrangement. International requests are welcome. Contact me for more details or to discuss your requirements.
School event testimonials
“The children had a fabulous day. Laurel engaged so well with all age groups, inspiring great interest and creativity. Giving top tips for engaging the reader really helped the pupils in their own story writing. An added bonus - the children left not only wanting to read and write, but also bake!”
“We had a brilliant event with Laurel during half-term. She spoke so passionately about being an author, that both the children who attended the event, and the bookshop staff were totally inspired!
"We did a charity 'Bake Off' - inviting the children to bring in their baking creations to be judged, then sold in aid of charity at the end of the day. Laurel judged the cakes during a break time and also was there at the end of the day to help sell them.
It was a fantastic day and Laurel packed a huge amount into the time. I can highly recommend her for a KS2 author visit."
